Monday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1
When I came to you, brothers and sisters,
proclaiming the mystery of God,
I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom.
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you
except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,
and my message and my proclamation
were not with persuasive words of wisdom,
but with a demonstration of spirit and power,
so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom
but on the power of God.
In Athens Paul had spoken like a philosopher but had failed dismally to make any converts. When then he came to Corinth, he must have decided to preach the Gospel in all its starkness, stressing how Jesus gave his life for us on the cross. His preaching was Jesus-centred. He didn’t only preach the Cross but very much the Resurrection. He didn’t try and persuade with human attractions but through the Spirit – his own inspired preaching and the charism given him for building up the community.
Gospel
Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up,
and went according to his custom
into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
Rolling up the scroll,
he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them,
“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
And all spoke highly of him
and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.
They also asked, “Is this not the son of Joseph?”
He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb,
‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place
the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’”
And he said,
“Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.
Indeed, I tell you,
there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah
when the sky was closed for three and a half years
and a severe famine spread over the entire land.
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent,
but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel
during the time of Elisha the prophet;
yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
When the people in the synagogue heard this,
they were all filled with fury.
They rose up, drove him out of the town,
and led him to the brow of the hill
on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.
It was actually a world event. Jesus declared that he was the Messiah foretold by the prophets.  He wasn’t the kind of Messiah the people were imagining and they could not accept him. They wanted miracles not the Word of God. He explains to them that God’s Salvation goes beyond Israel. They are so angry with his claims that they attempt to kill him.. As Simeon said to Mary “He is set for the rise and fall of many, a sign to be contradicted”. It begins in his home town. There is a silent world event in our midst. Jesus is here for those who have eyes to see. He is still the unexpected one. But he is here to bring his salvation, to do the ultimate good. Have you recognized him? Unlike the people of Nazareth do you welcome his Word and commit yourself to him through daily prayer?

Tuesday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1
Brothers and sisters:
The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.
Among men, who knows what pertains to the man
except his spirit that is within?
Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God.
We have not received the spirit of the world
but the Spirit who is from God,
so that we may understand the things freely given us by God.
And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom,
but with words taught by the Spirit,
describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms.
Now the natural man does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God,
for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it,
because it is judged spiritually.
The one who is spiritual, however, can judge everything
but is not subject to judgment by anyone.
For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.
We can only know the Spirit through  his effects. We have received the Spirit of God who knows the depths of God. Through the Spirit we understand the message of God. It is through the Spirit that we proclaim the message. “We have the mind of Christ” means we have the Spirit of Christ. The Spirit can influence us without our realising it is the Spirit. Hence the importance of praying that others receive the Spirit and of our own praying always in the Spirit.
Gospel
Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee.
He taught them on the sabbath,
and they were astonished at his teaching
because he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon,
and he cried out in a loud voice,
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down in front of them
and came out of him without doing him any harm.
They were all amazed and said to one another,
“What is there about his word?
For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out.”
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

At last hope has come into this world. The Anointed One has come and evil cannot resist him. Jesus is full of the Spirit of God. He teaches with authority. Does he teach you? Do you listen? Jesus is still present in the world but invisible and silent. So he anoints the baptized with the same Holy Spirit that he received. He can now continue his work through them to confront evil in all its forms and to teach with authority. Have you entered into his life and work? Have you taken your anointing seriously praying constantly for the Spirit to possess you and use you? Do you surrender yourself to Jesus so that he can be again a power to destroy evil and proclaim God’s rule but this time through you and in your world?  If you cooperate you can be a saviour in your world

Wednesday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1
Brothers and sisters,
I could not talk to you as spiritual people,
but as fleshly people, as infants in Christ.
I fed you milk, not solid food,
because you were unable to take it.
Indeed, you are still not able, even now,
for you are still of the flesh.
While there is jealousy and rivalry among you,
are you not of the flesh, and walking
according to the manner of man?
Whenever someone says, "I belong to Paul," and another,
"I belong to Apollos," are you not merely men?
What is Apollos, after all, and what is Paul?
Ministers through whom you became believers,
just as the Lord assigned each one.
I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth.
Therefore, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything,
but only God, who causes the growth.
He who plants and he who waters are one,
and each will receive wages in proportion to his labor.
For we are God's co-workers;
you are God's field, God's building.
According to Paul the ‘flesh’ means the desires of unredeemed human nature and are characterized by selfishness. We are to live by the Spirit “19 When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: sexual vice, impurity, and sensuality, 20 the worship of false gods and sorcery; antagonisms and rivalry, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels, disagreements, 21 factions and malice, drunkenness, orgies and all such things. And about these, I tell you now as I have told you in the past, that people who behave in these ways will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Gal5:19). In the Church all ministers work with one goal. They are all carrying out together the mission of God who is the origin and the goal of the work. There should be no rivalry.

Gospel
After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon.
Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever,
and they interceded with him about her.
He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her.
She got up immediately and waited on them.
At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases
brought them to him.
He laid his hands on each of them and cured them.
And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God."
But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak
because they knew that he was the Christ.
At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place.
The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him,
they tried to prevent him from leaving them.
But he said to them, "To the other towns also
I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God,
because for this purpose I have been sent."
And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Jesus has come to defeat the Evil One. He confronts evil and overpowers the forces of evil in all their manifestations. Hence he rebukes the sickness of Simon’s mother-in-law. He is the Servant of Yahweh and on being healed she joins him in serving and carrying out God’s will, as ordained for her. We too are given gifts, the greatest of which is to give people love through word and deed. Jesus spends the evening laying his hands on each of the crowd and healing them. It is love in action. In the early morning he goes to a lonely place to be alone with God. He needs this to know his Father’s will and he discerns that despite the temptation to respond to the crowd earnestly searching for him, he must leave. Are you a servant of Yahweh? Is your prayer a time to discern God’s will for you?                                                                                                                                  For 2nd Sept Thursday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1
Brothers and sisters:
Let no one deceive himself.
If anyone among you considers himself wise in this age,
let him become a fool, so as to become wise.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God,
for it is written:
God catches the wise in their own ruses,
and again:
The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
So let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs to you,
Paul or Apollos or Cephas,
or the world or life or death,
or the present or the future:
all belong to you, and you to Christ, and Christ to God.
The Church comprises the People of God – they belong to God and not to any particular preacher. Those who are given the office of teaching or governing belong to the Community of the Church, not the community them. All are brothers and sisters. There are to be no divisions or higher or lower ranks in the community of Christ. All belong to Jesus, the Christ, and he belongs to God. True wisdom is to have the mind of Christ.
Gospel
While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God,
he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,
"Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch."
Simon said in reply,
"Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing,
but at your command I will lower the nets."
When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish
and their nets were tearing.
They signaled to their partners in the other boat
to come to help them.
They came and filled both boats
so that the boats were in danger of sinking.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said,
"Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man."
For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him
and all those with him,
and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
who were partners of Simon.
Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid;
from now on you will be catching men."
When they brought their boats to the shore,
they left everything and followed him.
Their fishing had been a total failure, not even one fish. Now Jesus comes full of the Spirit. Having sat on the boat of Peter and preached the Word, he tells him to throw his net into the deep water. Peter reiterates their failure but on the strength of Jesus’ word throws out the net and gets an astounding catch. But now he is not to catch fish for dinner but men and women for salvation in Jesus. Peter leaves everything including the fish and follows Jesus. This is the beginning of his vocation. It will be a long time before he becomes Saint Peter but the process has begun. Jesus calls every disciple, he calls you. His call always includes being ’fishers of men’. How does he want you to catch them? Have courage, you throw out the net. He causes the catch. Are you willing to leave everything?

Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, pope and doctor of the Church

Reading 1
Brothers and sisters:
Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ
and stewards of the mysteries of God.
Now it is of course required of stewards
that they be found trustworthy.
It does not concern me in the least
that I be judged by you or any human tribunal;
I do not even pass judgment on myself;
I am not conscious of anything against me,
but I do not thereby stand acquitted;
the one who judges me is the Lord.
Therefore, do not make any judgment before the appointed time,
until the Lord comes,
for he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness
and will manifest the motives of our hearts,
and then everyone will receive praise from God.
Teachers in the Church are servants of Jesus. They are stewards too to hand out to the family members the blessings of God.. Both roles imply accountability to Jesus. Paul is concerned only with the Lord’s judgement on his thoughts and behaviour. It doesn’t matter what people think as long as Jesus sees that he has done well. Jesus  sees our hidden  motives for the actions we do. This is a blessing if we are trustworthy like Paul.
Gospel
The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,
"The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers,
and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same;
but yours eat and drink."
Jesus answered them, "Can you make the wedding guests fast
while the bridegroom is with them?
But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
then they will fast in those days."
And he also told them a parable.
"No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one.
Otherwise, he will tear the new
and the piece from it will not match the old cloak.
Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins,
and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined.
Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins.
And no one who has been drinking old wine desires new,
for he says, 'The old is good.'"
For the Pharisees religion was a matter of obligations, the Law. Jesus teaches us that love and religion are synonymous. The prophets had taught that God wanted a personal relationship of love with his people by describing the relationship of God and Israel as that of bride and groom. God wanted to call his people his wife. Jesus continuing in the same tradition sees himself as the Bridegroom. His religion is one of the joy of being with a Lover. However many of us prefer a religion of ritual and practices rather than a life lived for Someone. When we live a life of love this love affects every aspect of our life and every thought and action. Do you see yourself as ‘the bride’ of Christ for whom you live and die? If you do not, you have not tasted the new wine. This is the new cloak.

Saturday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1
Brothers and sisters:
Learn from myself and Apollos not to go beyond what is written,
so that none of you will be inflated with pride
in favor of one person over against another.
Who confers distinction upon you?
What do you possess that you have not received?
But if you have received it,
why are you boasting as if you did not receive it?
You are already satisfied; you have already grown rich;
you have become kings without us!
Indeed, I wish that you had become kings,
so that we also might become kings with you.
For as I see it, God has exhibited us Apostles as the last of all,
like people sentenced to death,
since we have become a spectacle to the world,
to angels and men alike.
We are fools on Christ's account, but you are wise in Christ;
we are weak, but you are strong;
you are held in honor, but we in disrepute.
To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty,
we are poorly clad and roughly treated,
we wander about homeless and we toil, working with our own hands.
When ridiculed, we bless; when persecuted, we endure;
when slandered, we respond gently.
We have become like the world's rubbish, the scum of all,
to this very moment. I am writing you this not to shame you,
but to admonish you as my beloved children.
Even if you should have countless guides to Christ,
yet you do not have many fathers,
for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel
The apostle’s strength and courage come from within him. It is from the union he has with Jesus in his inner spirit. Because he is rich in Christ then he can bear with any exterior trial, even ridicule, persecution, slander and to be considered of no use to the world. In his heart he is at peace and experiences the joy of Christ’s presence. Are you building up a deep personal relationship with Jesus as did Paul?
The Lord is near to all who call upon him (Response)
Gospel
While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a sabbath,
his disciples were picking the heads of grain,
rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
Some Pharisees said,
"Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?"
Jesus said to them in reply,
"Have you not read what David did
when he and those who were with him were hungry?
How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering,
which only the priests could lawfully eat,
ate of it, and shared it with his companions?"
Then he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."
The Sabbath was central to the Jewish religion. They observed it with fervour. Jesus does not abolish it but fulfills it beyond recognition. This causes the Pharisees to bitterly oppose him. They live in the past. The Messiah has come. Jesus himself is the fulfillment of the Sabbath. He himself replaces the Old Covenant. The Law and the Temple as they know them are obsolete. Jesus is everything. He is the Temple. Where he is there is the Holy of Holies. His disciples are the new priests gathered there. He gives them the Bread of Life to eat. The Sabbath too has shifted. Sunday is now The Day of the Lord. It is day of festivity. Through Jesus we have the life of God. As his royal children we share in the Sacred Banquet. We are not slaves. On Sunday we are to live as His children. Do you?
