Welcome to my blog.
For our daily spiritual nourishment, the Catholic
Church, under the Spirit’s inspiration, gives us readings from the Scriptures.
You will find them here along with a prayerful reflection upon them.
The Spirit who inspired the author, will also
inspire us if we read his Word with an open and humble heart.
May God bless you as your read.

The Spirit of God – source of love and peace
Ps 47: 10-11
We have
received your merciful love, O God,
in the midst of your temple.
Your praise,
O God, like your name,
reaches the
ends of the earth;
your right
hand is filled with saving justice.

Prayer
Father in
heaven, who through the abject humiliation
of your Son
on the Cross,
have saved a
world bent on self-destruction,
fill with
holy joy all those
you have
liberated from the yoke of sin
and grant
them everlasting happiness
in your
Kingdom.
We make our
prayer through your Son,
Christ Jesus
our Lord.

First reading
Hosea 14:2-10
We shall say no more “Our god” to the
work of our hands.
Thus says the Lord:
Return, O Israel, to the Lord,
your God;
you have collapsed through your guilt.
Take with you words,
and return to the Lord;
Say to him, “Forgive all iniquity,
and receive what is good, that we may render
as offerings the bullocks from our stalls.
Assyria will not save us,
nor shall we have horses to mount;
We shall say no more, ‘Our god,’
to the work of our hands;
for in you the orphan finds compassion.”
I will heal their defection, says the Lord,
I will love them freely;
for my wrath is turned away from them.
I will be like the dew for Israel:
he shall blossom like the lily;
He shall strike root like the Lebanon cedar,
and put forth his shoots.
His splendour shall be like the olive tree
and his fragrance like the Lebanon cedar.
Again they shall dwell in his shade
and raise grain;
They shall blossom like the vine,
and his fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.
Ephraim! What more has he to
do with idols?
I have humbled him, but I will prosper him.
“I am like a verdant cypress tree”—
because of me you bear fruit!
Let him who is wise understand these things;
let him who is prudent know them.
Straight are the paths of the Lord,
in them the just walk,
but sinners stumble in them.
THE WORD OF THE LORD
Prayerful reflection
Every saint has a past, every sinner
has a future – God fortunately always remains the same, the unbelievably loving
and welcoming husband of his wayward wife.
‘Now’ is who we are’ and when we are. Not
yesterday and not tomorrow. Through the prophet Hosea, God speaks to everyone
in every age. ‘There is no lasting joy in wealth, power, prestige, physical
pleasure and excitement or in any kind of self-indulgence’. These are like the
idols Hosea is encouraging the people of his day to abandon. Whatever our past,
we can have a glorious hope, because the Almighty God stretches out his hands
in a loving welcome where all is forgotten and the joy of love is found. Jesus
said the same of Jerusalem and he says the same of us: How often have I desired
to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings.
(Matt 23:37).
Now is the time we have. Now is the
person we are. God awaits us with longing. It is for us to respond. God himself
helps us to respond positively if we so wish: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in
our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit
intercedes with sighs too deep for words” (Rom 8:26). Let us call on the Holy
Spirit of God and surrender to his inspiration. Let us not give up till we have
the peace only he can give.
Can you enter into the cave of your own
heart and meet the God who longs for you?

Psalm
Psalm 51:3-4, 8-9,
12-13, 14 and 17
My mouth will declare your praise.
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.
My mouth will declare your praise.
Behold, you are pleased with sincerity of heart,
and in my inmost being you teach me wisdom.
Cleanse me of sin with hyssop, that I may be purified;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
My mouth will declare your praise.
A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.
My mouth will declare your praise.
Give me back the joy of your salvation,
and a willing spirit sustain in me.
O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
My mouth will declare your praise.

Alleluia, alleluia.
When the Spirit of truth comes,

Gospel
Matthew 10:16-23
For it will not be you who speak, but
the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Jesus said to his Apostles: “Behold, I am sending you like sheep in
the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. But beware
of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their
synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a
witness before them and the pagans. When they hand you over, do not worry about
how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment
what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your
Father speaking through you. Brother will hand over brother to death, and the
father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to
death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the
end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. Amen,
I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel before the Son of Man
comes.” THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD.
Prayerful reflection
Let us not deceive ourselves and think everything is going to be
peaceful for those who believe in Jesus. There is a hidden war going on in
creation. Satan and his minions are always at work desiring to destroy the work
of God. It is a hidden war. They know
that they do not have the strength to overthrow God in open warfare, but their
hatred is all-consuming. They are terrorists in the midst of God’s peaceful
people. As the Spirit of God can inspire us to love and do good, so Satan can deceive
and inspire others to do harm. His tactics are always the same. He must strike
without being seen. Satan will hardly ever show himself openly but he never
keeps quiet. He is secretly at the root of all evil, which he does through
those who listen to him. We can all be deceived. He can dress up as an angel of
light and preach beautiful sermons which in the end turn us away from God. We have
to be shrewd as serpents and see through his deception. God’s messengers always
speak the truth in love in order to build up and bring peace. Their lives will
also proclaim their message. Like doves, love and truth must be the guide in
everything we do and say.
Though Satan may appear to have the upper hand, we must not be afraid.
We have within us the Spirit of God. Satan cannot dare to face him or answer
him, when he speaks through us. St. Peter tells us that the devil, like a
roaring lion, goes around seeking whom he may devour. We are, he says, to stand
up to him in faith. Then he will do no harm. St. James tells us he will then
run away.
Can you recognize his hidden activity in your world and in
yourself?
Let us pray to persevere to the end, for the victory is assured.
Jesus won this on the Cross. The back of Satan is broken but he can still roar
and whisper too. Let us not be afraid. ‘If God is for us, who can be against us’
(Rom 8:31). Our victory lies in our closeness to Jesus.
Do you keep close to him each day?
Mt 11: 28
Come to me, all who labour and are burdened,
and I will refresh you, says the Lord.
