‘LORD, THAT I MAY SEE.’
A SHORT COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL OF THE DAY,
ACCORDING TO THE CATHOLIC LECTIONARY.
Gospel
Mark 6:53-56
All those who
touched him were cured
1.
Having made the crossing, Jesus and his disciples
came to land at Gennesaret and tied up.
2.
No sooner had they stepped out of the boat than
people recognised him,
3.
and started hurrying all through the countryside
4.
and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever
they heard he was.
5.
And wherever he went, to village, or town, or
farm,
6.
they laid down the sick in the open spaces,
7.
begging him
8.
to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak.
9.
And all those who touched him were cured.
All suffering in this world comes ultimately from
Satan and sin of which he is the instigator. He does not do the sin
necessarily, but he instigates human beings to sin. Sin produces the suffering
we all experience, including the tragedy and fear of death. The world is in the
hands of the ‘prince of this world.’ He has been able to do just what he likes
with human beings. But now a greater power has come.
God himself has entered the world as a man. With him, the Kingdom of God has made its entrance. It will grow until it encompasses the
whole of creation. Then Satan will be banished completely and all those who
have followed him. They will be bound in hell.
People were suffering. There were countless sick people.
But Jesus in his humanity is the advance guard of the Kingdom of God. Satan
cannot stand against him. All those who come to Jesus and even touch his
clothing with faith are healed.
It was like that then. it is the same today. If we
approach Jesus today with faith, even if we ‘touch the hem of his garments’ we
will be healed.
