Welcome to my blog. The Catholic Church under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit gives us each day at least two readings from the Bible, plus several verses from a psalm which is an inspired response to one of the readings, normally the first.

There is a cycle (a two year cycle for weekdays and a three year cycle for Sundays) which covers the major parts of the Old Testament, the Gospels and the New Testament writings.

Through these readings we get our spiritual nourishment. In my blog I give the readings and the inspirations I have received in my prayer. I want to share them with others. Lord reveal yourself to us through your Holy Spirit

Cf. Is 48: 20

Proclaim a joyful sound and let it be heard;

proclaim to the ends of the earth:

The Lord has freed his people, alleluia.

Prayer

Father, Easter time is one of joy in the victory of Jesus over death. Help us to always experience the joy of the Risen Lord among us and may this joy be manifested in all we say and do. We make our prayer through your Son, Christ Jesus our Lord.

First reading

Acts 8:5-8,14-17 ·

They laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit

Philip went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed the Christ to them. The people united in welcoming the message Philip preached, either because they had heard of the miracles he worked or because they saw them for themselves. There were, for example, unclean spirits that came shrieking out of many who were possessed, and several paralytics and cripples were cured. As a result there was great rejoicing in that town.

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, and they went down there, and prayed for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit, for as yet he had not come down on any of them: they had only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. THE WORD OF THE LORD

Prayerful reflection

The Holy Spirit is the greatest gift of Father and Son, because he is their Love. The Love of God is not something but Someone, their Holy Spirit.

In Baptism Jesus sends his Spirit to create us anew as God’s beloved children, liberated from Satan’s grasp and free from sin and given the very life of God. As a result, we call God, Abba – the name a small child uses for his/her father.

The child of God must live in the world among unbelievers and must be a light to them and salt. So, in Confirmation Jesus sends the Spirit to make us his witnesses, to be able to live and work in the world as God’s mature children. If you have been confirmed, call on the Spirit and you will get the ability to do all that God wants you to do for others.

Psalm 66:1-7,16,20

Cry out with joy to God, all the earth.

Cry out with joy to God all the earth,

O sing to the glory of his name.

O render him glorious praise.

Say to God: ‘How tremendous your deeds!

‘Before you all the earth shall bow;

shall sing to you, sing to your name!’

Come and see the works of God,

tremendous his deeds among men.

Cry out with joy to God, all the earth.

He turned the sea into dry land,

they passed through the river dry-shod.

Second reading

1 Peter 3:15-18

In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life

Reverence the Lord Christ in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that you all have. But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander you when you are living a good life in Christ may be proved wrong in the accusations that they bring. And if it is the will of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong.

Why, Christ himself, innocent though he was, had died once for sins, died for the guilty, to lead us to God. In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life.

Prayerful reflection

Most of us are not so well educated that we can give answers to all the questions people can ask about our faith. But our faith is not a system of theology. It is not something we learn like a subject in school. Our faith is primarily an experience. We have come to know Jesus who died for us on the Cross, was buried and rose again for us. He is alive and with us. To know him and to love him. This is our religion. We know him and love him all together and so we have liturgical worship. We know him and love individually so we have our own personal prayer and a life we live for him. With hm and for him, we are willing to suffer everything with patience, knowing that one day he will be our Salvation.

Gospel

John 14:15-21

I shall ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘If you love me you will keep my commandments.

I shall ask the Father,

and he will give you another Advocate

to be with you for ever,

that Spirit of truth

whom the world can never receive

since it neither sees nor knows him;

but you know him,

because he is with you, he is in you.

I will not leave you orphans;

I will come back to you.

In a short time, the world will no longer see me;

but you will see me,

because I live and you will live.

On that day you will understand that I am in my Father

and you in me and I in you.

Anybody who receives my commandments and keeps them

will be one who loves me;

and anybody who loves me will be loved by my Father,

and I shall love him and show myself to him.’

Prayerful reflection

‘If you love me you will keep my commandments

In these chapters Jesus is speaking very intimately with his disciples. He is speaking intimately to us too. Though the God of the universe, in loving humility, he has become a human being. He wants to sit with you too and speak to your heart.  God who is now a flesh and blood human being, wants to call you his friend. He wants you to feel at home with him. The Word of HOSEA is being fulfilled: “I will now allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her” (2:14)­

If we become his friend then we will always want to please him, do what he wants us to do. That is friendship. His commandment is to love under all circumstances. To love is to live.

I shall ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you

for ever, that Spirit of truth whom the world can never receive.

Our friendship with Jesus opens the door to his greatest gift. That is the Spirit of truth, the Advocate (Latin: Ad: to, vocare: to call). The advocate: when we call him, he comes and stands next to us to support us in all the circumstances of life and death too. He is the personification of the mutual binding love of Father and Son in the Trinity. He now unites us to our Friend, Jesus and to the Father.

I will not leave you orphans; I will come back to you.

Jesus comes to us through the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit is his love. His love is a Person.

If we receive the Holy Spirit, then we receive Jesus and the Father, because he is their Love. We will lack nothing and enjoy the peace that only he can give. Open your heart and everyday call on the Advocate to stand beside you as a universal support.

Anybody who receives my commandments and keeps them

will be one who loves me;

and anybody who loves me will be loved by my Father,

and I shall love him and show myself to him.

The key to experiencing Jesus in this life is to keep his commandment: love one another as I have loved you. In this are contained all the commandments. Jesus will, then, become a real person for us. What more do we need?

Jn 14: 15-16

If you love me, keep my commandments, says the Lord,

and I will ask the Father and he will send you another Paraclete,

to abide with you for ever, alleluia.

Prayer

Loving Father, Almighty God, through the Resurrection of Jesus you give us eternal life. Through the bread of your Word nourish us so that we may live as your Son lived in this world. We make our prayer through your Son, Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Let us also go that we may die with him. John 11.16

You have been buried with Christ in Baptism,

through which you also rose again

by faith through the working of God,

who raised him from the dead, alleluia.

 

Prayer

Lord, loving Father, through your power in the Sacrament of Baptism you have given us a new birth as your children. We share your very life, even now. Grant that those to whom you have given this firm hope of eternal life with you, may by your guidance in this life attain, one day, that glorious life. We make this prayer through your Son, Christ our Lord.

 

First reading

Acts 16:1-10 ·

'Come across to Macedonia and help us'

From Cilicia Paul went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra. Here there was a disciple called Timothy, whose mother was a Jewess who had become a believer; but his father was a Greek. The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of Timothy, and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travelling companion, had him circumcised. This was on account of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek.

As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, with instructions to respect them.

So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.

They travelled through Phrygia and the Galatian country, having been told by the Holy Spirit not to preach the word in Asia. When they reached the frontier of Mysia they thought to cross it into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them, they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.

One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and appealed to him in these words, ‘Come across to Macedonia and help us.’ Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced that God had called us to bring them the Good News.

 

Prayerful reflection

In order to save some, Paul makes himself all things to all people. He doesn’t believe in circumcision, nor the need to follow the Law of Moses, yet not to make the preaching of the Gospel repulsive to the Jews, he has Timothy circumcised. He is following his Master, Jesus. To save human beings, God the Son, emptied himself and became a human being and then lived among us. Likewise, we too must put aside all our own inclinations and become one with those we wish to bring to Jesus.

Notice that in the very early Church, there is a central authority which safeguards the unity of faith. It is exercised by Peter in union with the other apostles and elders. Once this is lost Christianity will be divided into a multitude of splinter groups. Peter and his successors are essential for the unity of the Church. Let us thank God for the papacy throughout the ages.

The Holy Spirit is as active today as much as in the early Church. However, we must be open to the Spirit and willing to follow his inspirations. His inspirations given to the Church and to each member of the Church will never go against the unity in faith and morals as taught by the apostles and handed on from generation to generation by the teaching authority of the Church.

Let each Catholic be anxious and active in bringing well intentioned people, desirous of knowing Jesus, to faith in him.

The world hated me before it hated you      John 15:18-21.

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘If the world hates you,

remember that it hated me before you.

If you belonged to the world,

the world would love you as its own;

but because you do not belong to the world,

because my choice withdrew you from the world,

therefore, the world hates you.

Remember the words I said to you: A servant is not greater than his master.

If they persecuted me, they will persecute you too;

if they kept my word, they will keep yours as well.

But it will be on my account that they will do all this,

because they do not know the one who sent me.’

 

Prayerful Reflection

Jesus said, ‘no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him’ (Matt 11:28). It follows then, that anyone who rejects Jesus will not know the Father. They will not know God, though they may have ideas about him. The Father is the One who sent Jesus, not to condemn the world, but to save it (John 3:16). The world in its philosophy and practice is opposed to the teaching of Jesus in the Gospel. There is a ruler of this world. He has no part with Jesus. (John 14:30). He has no power over Jesus, but he will make war on Jesus. And so, Jesus was persecuted and killed. Those who follow Jesus will also be persecuted and even martyred. This takes place throughout the world. Maybe in more sophisticated countries they will not actually crucify Jesus again, nor kill his followers. They will ignore him and them as irrelevant, backward looking, out of date people. They will mock their beliefs and practices and side-line them, holding them up for ridicule.

Jesus, however, has warned us of this. We should know this, if we enter upon his way. But in the end, he will be victorious and those who persevere to the end will also share his glory.

 (Matt 10:23, Revelation 3:21).

Do you pray daily for strength to be an open witness to Jesus and his values in a hostile world?

 

Jn 17: 20-21

Father, I pray for them, that they may be one in us,

so that the world may believe it was you who sent me,

says the Lord, alleluia

 

 

Concluding Prayer

Father, we believe in Jesus with all our hearts, but we are weak human beings. In your great love, you have liberated us from sin by the death of your Son. Preserve us in your love so that we may have the joy of his Resurrection.

Friendship with Jesus in Faith and the Holy Spirit

Prayer

Father, as Jesus died to this life and rose to a new life in his Resurrection, may we who believe in him also die now to sin and evil and rise to the new life in the Holy Spirit which will lead us into the glory of your presence in heaven. We make our prayer through your Son Christ our Lord.

First reading

Acts 15:22-31 ·

It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by us not to burden you beyond these essentials

The apostles and elders decided to choose delegates to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; the whole church concurred with this. They chose Judas known as Barsabbas and Silas, both leading men in the brotherhood, and gave them this letter to take with them:

‘The apostles and elders, your brothers, send greetings to the brothers of pagan birth in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. We hear that some of our members have disturbed you with their demands and have unsettled your minds. They acted without any authority from us; and so we have decided unanimously to elect delegates and to send them to you with Barnabas and Paul, men we highly respect who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accordingly, we are sending you Judas and Silas, who will confirm by word of mouth what we have written in this letter. It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by ourselves not to saddle you with any burden beyond these essentials: you are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols; from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right. Farewell.’

The party left and went down to Antioch, where they summoned the whole community and delivered the letter. The community read it and were delighted with the encouragement it gave them. THE WORD OF THE LORD.

The Church in Jerusalem, the Apostles and elders, are confidant that they are guided by the Holy Spirit. Not only them, but the Holy Spirit will guide the Church, which Jesus founded and in which he lives, until the end of time. This is the supreme promise of Jesus at the Last Supper.

We may wonder why all these conditions which we may not have to follow today. The pagan converts were living together with Jewish converts. Charity would oblige the new converts to avoid things that were abhorrent to Jews such as eating food with blood in it, certain forbidden degrees of marriage. Meat offered to idols, too, may disturb the faith of new converts if they ate it.

Notice too how the Apostles do not give a mighty command, but say, if you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right.

If we are led by the Holy Spirit we always speak with love and in a way to build up others.

I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples.

Awake, my soul,

awake, lyre and harp,

I will awake the dawn.

Gospel

John 15:12-17

I do not call you servants. i call you my friends

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘This is my commandment:

love one another,

as I have loved you.

A man can have no greater love

than to lay down his life for his friends.

You are my friends,

if you do what I command you.

I shall not call you servants any more,

because a servant does not know

his master’s business;

I call you friends,

because I have made known to you

everything I have learnt from my Father.

You did not choose me:

no, I chose you;

and I commissioned you

to go out and to bear fruit,

fruit that will last;

and then the Father will give you

anything you ask him in my name.

What I command you is to love one another.’  

THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD

Jeremiah tells in 17:9 that the human heart is more deceitful that anything else. One way in which we deceive ourselves is to think that we are very great. When in great need we may pray to God with great passion and tears. When God does not answer us as we wish, how many of us think. ‘it’s a waste of time to pray to God.’ Others even get angry with God and refuse to pray again. ‘My child has died, my husband has died, or my wife and God did nothing to help’ and they give up their religion, never go to church again.

Isaiah in chapter 40 explains how the whole universe before God is as a drop of water, or like a grain of sand in our hands. It is as nothing before him. ‘In his eyes all the nations of the world count for nothing, they are just like froth’. So then what am I? Before God we humans should sit in awe-full silence. How can I or all of this ‘grain of sand’ together understand the ways and mind of God?

But this God who is beyond anything we can think or imagine, someone who transcends us so much that we can know nothing about him as he is in himself, this God has become a human being. He has become like me in every way, with all the limitations that I have and, in his humanity, has emptied himself of all his divine prerogatives. He is Jesus, born of Mary.

He wants me to be his friend. He wans to share everything with me, to be at my side. It won’t be that everything will go so placidly and without pain – I look at his Cross – but he is my friend. He will not leave me; he will give me joy and peace even now and he will bring me one day to the Resurrection. To be a faithful friend is the key.

Are you close, in faith, to Jesus as a human being? Are you a real friend to him, faithful through thick and thin? He is. We have nothing to fear, everything will be well, whatever happens.

The Crucified is risen from the dead

and has redeemed us, alleluia.

Prayer

Father, may we who through our faith enjoy intimate friendship with Jesus, your Son, always live to please him in our every thought, word and deed and be faithful to him until death, just he was for us. We make our prayer through your Son, Christ our Lord.

Today in the Catholic Church we celebrate the feast of St. Matthias, the apostle chosen in place of Judas. However, for the sake of the continuity of the readings I am following those for Thursday of the fifth week of Easter.

Love for Jesus means love for one another

Prayer

Loving Father, we were sinners, but your grace has made us holy. We were in despair, but you have filled us with the hope of eternal life. As you work out our salvation, never leave us, but fill us always with your presence. Help us to persevere in your love. We make our prayer through your Son, Christ our Lord.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 15: 7-21

I rule that we do not make things difficult for pagans who turn to God.

 After the discussion had gone on a long time, Peter stood up' and addressed the apostles and elders. 'My brothers,' he said 'you know perfectly well that in the early days God made his choice among you: the pagans were to learn the Good News from me and so become believers. In fact, God, who can read everyone's heart, showed his approval of them by giving the Holy Spirit to them just as he had to us. God made no distinction between them and us, since he purified their hearts by faith. It would only provoke God's anger now, surely, if you imposed on the disciples the very burden that neither we nor our ancestors were strong enough to support? Remember, we believe that we are saved in the same way as they are: through the grace of the Lord Jesus.'

This silenced the entire assembly, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul describing all the signs and wonders God had worked through them among the pagans.

 When they had finished it was James who spoke. 'My brothers,' he said 'listen to me. Simon has described how God first arranged to enlist a people for his name out of the pagans. This is entirely in harmony with the words of the prophets, since the scriptures say: After that I shall return and rebuild the fallen House of David; I shall rebuild it from its ruins and restore it. Then the rest of mankind, all the pagans who are consecrated to my name, will look for the Lord, says the Lord who made this known so long ago.

'I rule, then, that instead of making things more difficult for pagans who turn to God, we send them a letter telling them merely to abstain from anything polluted by idols, from fornication, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. For Moses has always had his preachers in every town, and is read aloud in the synagogues every Sabbath.'

The word of the Lord.

The Church was faced with a very serous problem which could have split it in two in its very beginning. The problem was: should pagan converts have to follow all the prescriptions of the Law of Moses? Should they in fact have to become Jews as Jesus was a Jew and all the first converts? Both sides held very firm views and there had been fierce arguments. THE WORD OF THE LORD

All the leaders of the Church gathered in Jerusalem. They have given all generations of Christians a model for solving  disputes. They prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to seek the truth in a spirit of love, both for one another and for the pagan converts. They were open and listened to one another.  Then in love they discovered a way which was acceptable to all. The unity of the Church was for the first Christians paramount. ‘We must not break our oneness in Christ’ -  this was their principle. The Spirit showed them the way of truth and love.

Psalm 96 

R. Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.

O sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name.

 Proclaim his help day by day, tell among the nations his glory and his wonders among all the peoples.  Proclaim to the nations: 'God is king.' The world he made firm in its place; he will judge the peoples in fairness.

Gospel

The Catholic Church is a visible society with certain structures and traditions. As the scaffolding around a house during its construction is necessary, though not beautiful, so the externals of the Church are necessary. They serve one purpose only. They are to safeguard and nourish the heart of our Catholic Faith.

The heart of our Faith is a personal loving relationship with Jesus. Jesus has chosen us for his own. He loves us as his Father loves him. The Father and the Son are one in love. Likewise, Jesus remains with us always, even physically with his humanity. The Holy Eucharist is the heart of our Faith. He is present because his love impels him to be with those, he loves with all his heart.

Our Catholic Faith is to respond to him, primarily in the Holy Eucharist though also in other ways, both as a community and as individuals who love him dearly, indeed with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. To the extent we have this personal relationship in love with Jesus, to that extent only are we Christian and Catholic.

Love is a sweet coercion to reach out to the beloved for their good. We sacrifice ourselves for the one we truly love. Our love for Jesus impels us to please him at all times and under all circumstance. Our love makes our life’s goal to bring him joy. So, we keep his commandments and are immediately and truly sorry if we ever fail him. The visible hallmark of the Church is to be mutual love like the love of Jesus for us.

Without this the externals, either for the Church as a whole or for the individual, have no meaning. Is your life centred on your love for Jesus? This is the key question we must ask ourselves.
