A God who is humble and loving towards all

Welcome to my blog. Peace be with you.

Today we learn a profound mystery. It is God who is the greatest is a humble and loving God. He makes himself the servant of each one.

A God who is humble and loving towards all

Gospel

Matthew 18:1-5,10

Anyone who welcomes a little child in my name welcomes me

1.      The disciples came to Jesus and said,

2.      ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’

3.      So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them.

4.      Then he said, ‘I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

5.      And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

6.      ‘Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.

7.      See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven.’

Prayerful reflection

We must make Jesus real. He is a living, flesh and blood human being present as such to us in the Holy Eucharist. He is also God, all powerful and all loving. We approach him in his humanity, in which he is one with us. Though we cannot recognise him with any of our senses, we know through our faith that he is present, loving and caring. ‘The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.’ We too must approach him in prayer.

If the greatest in the kingdom of heaven makes himself ‘as little as a small child,’ then God himself must be supremely like this. He is supremely humble. Every sincere seeker need have no fear. We can prayer with utter confidence. This is true, because we see it in Jesus – God who became a man. He emptied himself and willingly became our slave and died in ignominy and pain to save us from hell.

To be a person like God, we too must humble ourselves in love like him. We are to make ourselves slaves of love for others.

God cares for the weak and lovingly serves them. He has then a special love for babies and children. So should we. By proxy, we love and serve God by loving and serving them.

As we reveal God’s love to children and others, so God involves angels to protect us. He omits no one. Each one has an angel to guard, protect and guide as Jesus says in today’s passage. We need to remember him, speak to him and rest assured in his presence. He will remember us in the presence of God. He too will intercede for us in all the different circumstances of our life with Jesus
