Grasp the opportunity when you have it

Welcome to my blog. Peace be with you.

If only we would realise it, we have an unbelievable opportunity open to us. One day we will be ever grateful that we took or ever regretful that we missed it through our own fault. It is to become the friend of God – not in his magnificence, but in his humble appearance as Jesus born of Mary and who lived and worked in Nazareth. He s with us today if we have eyes to see him.

Grasp the opportunity when you have it

Gospel

Luke 11:29-32

As Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be a sign

The crowds got even bigger, and Jesus addressed them:

‘This is a wicked generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. On Judgement day the Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here. On Judgement day the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation and condemn it, because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here.’

Prayerful reflection

The people of Nineveh repented when Jonah preached to them. Who was Jonah? He was a very imperfect prophet. The queen of the South was overawed at listening to Solomon. Who was Solomon? A very imperfect human being and king. The people of his time did not listen to Jesus, nor were they overawed when they heard him speak. In fact, they opposed him at every turn. But who is Jesus? He is the Son of God, equal in every way with God the Father. Put aside the Jews. What about us? Do we recognise that he is God himself? He invites us to be his friend. Can there be any greater opportunity open to a human being? How many grasp it? Do you?
