The more you share the cleaner your heart

Welcome to my blog. Peace be with you.

Generous sharing of what we have with others purifies our hearts of selfishness. We become more like God who does nothing for us except share what he has. In this, the Lord tells us today, our hearts are cleansed.

The more you share the cleaner your heart

Gospel

Luke 11:37-41

Give thanks for what you have and it will all be clean

1.      Jesus had just finished speaking when a Pharisee invited him to dine at his house.

2.      He went in and sat down at the table.

3.      The Pharisee saw this and was surprised that he had not first washed before the meal.

4.      But the Lord said to him, ‘Oh, you Pharisees! You clean the outside of cup and plate, while inside yourselves you are filled with extortion and wickedness.

5.      Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside too?

6.      Instead, give alms from what you have

7.      and then indeed everything will be clean for you.’

 prayerful reflection

How does almsgiving purify the soul? God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, are the supreme almsgivers. They have freely given everything that is in the universe, including the universe itself. They continue to fill us with their blessings of every kind. Jesus who God in human form empties himself of everything till he has nothing else, not even himself as he hangs dead on the Cross. If we share everything we have, then we are like God himself. We should share in imitation of the God who created us and has made us his beloved children. The more we share the more we become pure like God our Father. With our sharing we shed our selfishness.

In our selfishness we are attached to this world and the things of this world, generous sharing of all that we have physical and spiritual expresses and strengthens our faith in the world to come and in the words of Jesus. ‘Give to the poor and earn riches in heaven.’

True love cleanses our heart as we give ourselves to others. Likewise, when we share with those in need we express our true love for Jesus – ‘I was hungry etc and you shared with me.’ However, sharing is not just a cold charity, we must share ourselves, our time, our concern, our love for others and for Jesus in others.

Since it is from the heart that all wickedness flows, it follows that if our hearts are pure everything will be pure for us.
